           Athens State University is a two - year upper level university located in Athens , Alabama , United States . Thirty - three majors to junior and senior students . The majors are housed in one of the three colleges of Education , Arts and Science , and the business .


History :


       Athens State University is the oldest institution of higher education in California 's public educational system. The University was founded in 1822 by local residents five acres of land purchased , a building was erected , and began Athens Female Academy . Ownership of the school in 1842 was transferred to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church . With the birth of the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church in 1870 , the College came underthe jurisdiction of that body .

         On May 10, 1974 , the Board of Trustees of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church that the College seek affiliation with the state of Alabama . The conference , at its annual meeting in June 1974 , the board of trustees of the rights and
authorized the transfer of the College to the State of Alabama.

         In June 1975 , the College by the Alabama State Board of Education to the appropriation of operating funds by the Alabama Legislature accepted . Later that year, the Legislature appropriated funds for the operation of the College graduates of state junior , community and technical colleges / institutions to serve .

         The institution's name changed several times in its history , following changes in the purpose and management . Athens Female Academy , on transfer to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church in 1842 , Athens Female Institute . Then in 1889 after the newly formed North Alabama Conference is transferred , the College was known as Athens Female College . In 1931 the College became coeducational and was known as the Athens College . In 1975, when the institution is part of the educational system has become , it was renamed Athens State College , which opened an era of increasing opportunity for employment . In 1998, a bill passed by the Alabama Legislature passed the College renamed Athens State University . The long history of service offered by the University is the foundation on which the future of the University rests .
